Sure, he could have learned it on his own, but he'd been too busy-and besides, the theory had always been that Federation ships stayed in Federation space and never encountered Klingons. Theoretically.
Or was the underlying assumption so ugly we couldn't admit it to ourselves? McCoy wondered. That a Klingon life wasn't worth saving . . . The crowd's chanting grew so loud he could no longer think. The defense attorney-dark-skinned, broad-shouldered, powerfully built-entered the arena.
McCoy had been too distraught at their first and only brief meeting to remember his name. He remembered only his surprise at the fact that the likable young Klingon seemed sincerely interested in trying to help his clients, though he offered little hope of a favorable verdict. The attorney proffered two unfamiliar-looking devices to McCoy and Kirk. McCoy took one, frowning at it uncertainly until the attorney showed them how to hold it. Jim caught on and leaned over to shout in McCoy's ear. "Translators!"
McCoy nodded and held his translator to his ear as General Chang emerged from the shadows. The audience stilled expectantly. Prisoners, prosecution, defense, McCoy thought. But where are the judge and jury?
General Chang began to speak, his expression one of utter smugness and satisfaction. McCoy glared, convinced that Chang had been waiting a long time for this moment. He adjusted the translator against his ear and listened.
"The state will show," Chang said, "that Enterprise fired on Kronos One without provocation, the chancellor and his advisers having been lulled into a false sense of security with an invitation to a state dinner aboard Captain Kirk's vessel at nineteenthirty hours that same evening." He turned to Kirk with a slight, insulting smile. "Do you deny all this?" "Kirk! Kirk!" the spectators hooted.
McCoy heard metal strike stone and gazed up into the darkness directly behind them in time to catch a fleeting glimpse of the ghostly pale features of the judge.
The crowd stilled.
"The prisoner will respond," the judge commanded.
He wore a studded glove to which was attached a dull metal sphere that McCoy realized served as gavel.
A muscle in Jim's jaw danced. "I don't deny we invited them to dinner." "Were you drunk at that dinner?" Chang asked silkily. "What?"
Jim drew back, confused and angered.
"Isn't it a fact," Chang, continued, "that you served Romulan ale, a beverage
illegal in the Federation because of its overwhelming potency?" "The drink was served," Jim admitted.
